UPS Capacity Checker: Will Your Mini PC and Router Fit?

A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) protects an always-on mini PC from power cuts, but only if it is big enough. This checker adds up the power draw of your devices and compares it with the UPS output rating.

UPS Capacity Checker

Add up the power draw of the devices you want to plug into a UPS and check that it fits within the UPS output rating (watts).

Devices (fill in what you know)

Measured values from a plug-in power meter are the most accurate. If unknown, use the maximum rating printed on the device or its power adapter to stay on the safe side.

Enter your devices’ power draw and the UPS output rating (W).

Runtime during an outage depends on load and battery condition. Look up the “total load” above in the runtime chart published by your UPS manufacturer.

Choosing a UPS

  • Compare watts, not VA. UPS specs often list two numbers, such as 550 VA / 330 W. Your devices’ power draw should be compared with the watt figure.
  • Runtime depends on load. The more you connect, the shorter the runtime. Check the manufacturer’s runtime chart for your total load.
  • Include your network gear if you want your connection to stay up during an outage.
  • Automatic shutdown: a UPS that connects to your PC by USB can shut it down safely before the battery runs out.
